S.T.O.P. DAY & MEDICATION GIVE-BACK DAY SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2016
Riverhead, NY – Riverhead Town Supervisor, Sean M. Walter, along with the Town Board, urge residents to join them on Saturday, October 15, when the Town of Riverhead’s Sanitation Department holds its annual S.T.O.P Day (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Riverhead Highway Department Yard located at 1177 Osborn Avenue in Riverhead (just north of the Riverhead Ambulance garage).
In conjunction with S.T.O.P. Day, Riverhead CAP’s Riverhead Community Coalition for Safe and Drug-Free Youth will hold a ‘Medication Give- Back’ at the same location. This program helps in the proper disposal of medications so that drinking water will be protected from pharmaceutical residue contamination. It will also help to prevent substance abuse and medication theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs while addressing a vital public safety and public health issue.
These programs address the growing nationwide problem of properly disposing of residential household hazardous waste and E-Waste (e.g. computers, cell phones, pagers and VCRs) including unwanted or expired medications. “These items not only have a low level of biodegradability, but they contain materials that are highly toxic when released into the environment,” said Supervisor Walter. “I encourage all Riverhead Town residents to bring any of their old computers, paint cans, pesticides, household cleaners or any unused or expired medications down to the Highway Department’s yard on Saturday.”
For more information on acceptable materials/medications to bring to S.T.O.P. Day or should you have any other questions regarding these programs, please call the Sanitation Department at (631) 727-3200 ext. 391 or Riverhead CAP at (631) 727-3722 ext. 106 for questions regarding the Medication Give-Back program.
