Riverhead Town Requests Urgent Water Conservation

With more hot, dry weather in the forecast, Riverhead Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith is asking residents and businesses to help conserve water by reducing lawn irrigation for the foreseeable future.

With sprinkler systems increasing our summer water usage by as much as 80%, this is a challenging time to maintain Riverhead’s water supply.  Due to this significant usage coupled with the absence of replenishing rain, town water tanks are taking longer to refill and putting us at risk for not meeting demand.

As this is a critical time to be judicious in watering, residents and businesses are encouraged to conserve by following a few suggestions:

  • Consider ODD/EVEN sprinkler settings rather than daily
  • Water before 10am or after 4pm
  • Pare down the run time by 10% per zone.  For instance, if the current setting is 10 minutes per zone, reduce it to 9 minutes.
  • Make sure the sprinkler is adjusted so that only the lawn, and not the street, is being watered.

A few simple steps can make a huge difference in assuring that we can continue to have a good supply of water through the summer months.
