SupervisorJens-Smith and Riverhead PBA Announce Contract Deal

Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith, Deputy Supervisor Tim Hubbard, and the Riverhead Police Benevolent Association (PBA) have settled on a 5 year contract. This agreement comes after Police Officers have gone without a contract for over 2 years under the prior administration.

Supervisor Jens-Smith says, “We are pleased to have reached an agreement with our Police Officers.  The PBA’s membership go to work every day to protect us, and it was only right that we give them a fair deal. Without the hard work of both negotiating teams this deal would not have been possible.”

Riverhead Police Officers will be the first police department on the East End to have all current employees paying into their health insurance. Active police officers will pay 15% into their health insurance premiums and 10% in retirement.

“The PBA realized that they could do more to help the Town cut expenses and they suggested cost saving measures to allow the Town to do just that. I cannot praise them enough for their willingness to work with us to get results not only for their membership, but for Riverhead” said Deputy Supervisor Hubbard.

Some other highlights from the contract include:

1)    Healthcare contribution from all employees

2)    Increasing Night Differential pay

3)    Shortening promotion timeline for Detectives

4)    Increasing clothing, K-9, and equipment allowances

“The PBA negotiating team is happy that the current administration was able to work out a fair deal for PBA and the Town,” said PBA President Dixon Palmer.

The Supervisor, Deputy Supervisor, PBA and the negotiating teams have worked hard to ensure that our Police can continue to safeguard the well-being of our residents here in the Town of Riverhead. The agreement was passed unanimously by the Town Board and will take effect within this year.
