Riverhead Focuses on the Environment with New Committee
Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith and the Town Board adopted a resolution last week to create and authorize the appointment of members to an exciting new Environmental Advisory Committee.
This 12-member committee will exchange ideas and implement strategies to form a long term plan to create a more sustainable and greener community. With a focus on conservation, restoration, and our economy. We will access local, state and federal grants to improve our water quality and precious habitats. Future construction will be built to compliment the surrounding natural resources, and with resilience to flooding and storm damage. Our emphasis will be to find economically beneficial solutions to reduce energy consumption, minimize waste-with a focus on use of disposable plastics. By partnering with local businesses and community leaders we hope to improve the economic and environmental wellbeing of our town now and into the future.
Councilwoman Catherine Kent will be the Town Board Liaison to this committee and is very motivated to get this committee started. The Councilwoman said, “It is critical that we work together to preserve open space and protect our fragile environment. I look forward to working with this committee as we find workable solutions to grow Riverhead in an environmentally responsible way.”
Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith says, “As we keep an eye to revitalizing our downtown we need to also make sure we develop it knowing the environmental issues it faces. This committee will help bring smart, planning to our future development. It is time we start addressing these issues so that Riverhead’s businesses can flourish.”
Riverhead residents 18 and older, knowledgeable in the related subject, are invited to apply.
Interested applicants should submit cover letters and resumes by close of business on December 14th to email@example.com. For further information, call the Supervisor’s Office at (631) 727-3200 ext. 654.
