Supervisor Jens-Smith to Hold Clean-Up of Train Station

WHAT: Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith is holding her seasonal Train Station Clean-Up as part of her on going revitalization efforts for the area.

WHEN: September 28, 2019 at 8:30 AM

WHERE: Riverhead Train Station

The revitalization of the Riverhead Train Station continues this fall, as volunteers from throughout Riverhead descend on the area September 28th at 8:30 AM to beautify this transportation center. Building on the success of the past clean-ups neighbors will plant, dig, and sweep this part of Riverhead’s Downtown.

These efforts are only made possible by generous residents and businesses donating their efforts and resources to improving their town. Supervisor Jens-Smith would like to thank Home Depot, the MTA, Gabrielsen Farms, and the numerous Civic Associations for their previous assistance.

This will be the first clean-up since Supervisor Jens-Smith announced that a tenant will be occupying the long vacant train station building. Finding a tenant for the structure had been a major goal of the Town’s for many years prior to the Supervisor accomplishing this objective this past June. She has previously organized three other clean-ups of the train station, as well as increased police presence in the area, added security cameras to the building, replaced frosted glass panels that blocked views of the train tracks; relocated trees that blocked the sight of oncoming street traffic and bricked areas to make it safer and more handicapped accessible.

Supervisor Jens-Smith says, “After many years Riverhead is starting to see progress in this area. There is still a lot of work ahead of us, but if we keep seeing the level of support from the community we have gotten previously, revitalization of this area will happen. I want to thank all those who come out to volunteer at these clean-ups and invite every resident to become part of this community effort.”

Further improvements for the Train Station and surrounding area will continue as Supervisor Jens-Smith plans continued revitalizing efforts.
