PLANNING DEPARTMENT NEWS

The Riverhead Town Board and the Town Departments have made significant progress in implementing the land use policies, goals and recommendations of the 2003 Comprehensive Plan. The Town is currently in the process of updating its Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan, also known as the Master Plan, is a document designed to guide the future actions of our town. It presents a vision for the future, with long-range goals and objectives for all activities that affects our government. This includes guidance on how to make decisions on public and private land development proposals, the expenditure of public funds, availability of tax policy (tax incentives), cooperative efforts and issues of pressing concern, such as farmland preservation, sustainable development or the rehabilitation of older neighborhoods areas. The Plan will provide direction for future activities over a 10- to 20-year period after its adoption.

Community input and engagement is a critical part of the process in planning for the Town’s future. As part of this effort, there will be a series of hamlet meetings and breakout groups that will focus in key areas that shape the Town, such as the reuse and redevelopment of vacant buildings along the Route 58 corridor, farmland preservation, environmental protection, sustainable development and housing. Public announcements and notices will be made to alert the public about these meetings.
