The volunteers of the Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps (RTVAC) are here to serve you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our highly trained members unselfishly volunteer their time, talents and energy for the health, safety and well being of their neighbors. We are still 100% volunteer and we take pride in the fact that we can be there for you in your time of need.

The Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps (RTVAC) was founded in 1978 with and initial group of 15 dedicated citizens. It has undergone many exciting changes and now stands as an organization of 72 members who are available to respond to any medical emergency within the Town of Riverhead. We are the only volunteer ambulance corps that is a department of a municipality in New York State. RTVAC is licensed to provide ambulance service to the Township of Riverhead which is an area of approximately 78 square miles and a population of 24,000 and cover all but that area which is overlapped by Wading River Fire Department. For the 1995 calendar year we responded to 1446 calls and the members put in over 3000 man-hours.

The members of Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc. offer their prayers, sympathy, and condolences to all of the victims, rescuers and their families who have suffered as a result of all actions against the United States of America on September 11, 2001.  In response to this national tradedy, the Riverhead Ambulance Corps members have pledged ten thousand dollars ($10,000) to assist the families of their fellow Emergency Medical Services personnel seriously injured, disabled or killed as a result of the World Trade Center attack and collapse.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation formed in 1978 and incorporated in 1996.    It's 85 volunteer members answer approximately 2000 calls for emergency medical assistance each year from residents and visitors to the Riverhead Town Ambulance District, located in Riverhead, Long Island, New York.

Membership information


We are always looking for volunteers who wish to contribute totheir community.

Membership requirements include; 1. A desire to help the community. 2. Be at least 18 years of age. 3. Be willing to commit a minimum of 6 hours a week to respond to calls. 4. Be available to attend monthly membership and training meetings.

Some benefits of membership: 1. A feeling of satisfaction and joy when you help someone in need. 2. Becoming a member of an organization and meeting new friends and contacts. 3. We provide basic training and will pay for most other EMS training courses. 4. Plus other incentives such as social gatherings, uniforms, and comradery.
